gives rise to non-trivial effects including oscillations. In this equation, α = e, μ, τ and νi is the state of definite mass mi. The complex numbers Uαi constitute the mixing matrix. Additional light neutral fermions usually known as “sterile neutrinos νs” may also exist. If so, then Eq. (1) must be generalised in the obvious way. For the three flavour case, the mixing matrix can be parameterised in terms of three physical mixing angles and some CP violating phases (the precise number of which depends on whether the neutrino masses are of Dirac or Majorana form). If light sterile neutrinos exist, then there are additional mass and mixing parameters. Oscillations arise due to relative phases between the νi induced by time evolution. Considering two flavours only for simplicity, the mixing pattern

The JHF-Kamioka neutrino project is a second generation long base line neutrino oscillation experiment that probes physics beyond the Standard Model by high precision measurements of the neutrino masses and mixing. A high intensity narrow band neutrino beam is produced by secondary pions created by a high intensity proton synchrotron at JHF (JAERI). The neutrino energy is tuned to the oscillati...
متن کاملThe Results of Oscillation Analysis in K2k Experiment and an Overview of Jhf-ν Experiment
This paper presents the results of oscillation analysis in K2K experiment. The results show indications of neutrino oscillation and give a new constraint on the oscillation parameters. The difference of neutrino masses squared ∆m lies between 1.5 and 3.9×10 eV at sin 2θ = 1 with the confidence level of 90%. In addition to these results, a brief overview of future long-baseline neutrino experime...
متن کاملLetter of Intent Neutrino Oscillation Experiment at JHF
The first stage of a next-generation long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment is proposed to explore the physics beyond the Standard Model. The experiment will use the high intensity proton beam from the JHF 50 GeV proton synchrotron (JHF PS), and Super-Kamiokande as a far detector. The baseline length will be 295 km. The beam power of JHF PS is capable of delivering 3.3× 10 50 GeV protons...
متن کاملLong Baseline Neutrino Physics: From Fermilab to Kamioka
We have investigated the physics potential of very long baseline experiments designed to measure νμ → νe oscillation probabilities. The principles of our design are to tune the beam spectrum to the resonance energy for the matter effect, and to have the spectrum cut off rapidly above this energy. The matter effect amplifies the signal, and the cut-off suppresses backgrounds which feed-down from...
متن کاملThe T2K Neutrino Oscillation Experiment and Possible Future Projects
The Tokai to Kamioka (T2K) experiment is a next generation long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment utilising the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) high intensity proton synchrotron. After a brief introduction of the current understanding of neutrino mixing, the T2K experiment, its current status and the expected physics results are presented. Then, possibilities for futur...
